Nuka Bay July 2014

We took S/V Elnora to the Nuka Bay area in July and were able to visit some places we had not been to before. Nuka Bay is about 50 nautical miles southwest of Seward and is located in the Kenai Fjords National Park.

PS_2624 This gunkholing is hard work!

  • IMG_0846 Looking north up McCarty Fjord. Midnight Cove is on the east (right) side of the fjord.
  • IMG_0863 I heard this eagle hit the surface of the water when he caught this salmon, it sounded like a whale breaching! I jumped in the dinghy and was able to get a couple quick shots before it flew with the salmon up to it's nest high in a tree near where Elnora was anchored. Those little specks are not dirt on the lens or sensor, they are aggravating little bugs that like to fly in your nose, ears and eyes!

  • IMG-0861 This waterfall is about 900' high. It is at the head of Falls Cove, North Arm of Nuka Bay. The water is all from snowmelt on the snowfield above.

  • PS_2533 It seems we aren't the first people in Chance Lagoon. We found the #2 mark also but did not find #1.

  • PS_2519 Sputnik. Or at least that is what we named it. In reality it is a 17 inch diameter glass sphere used as flotation for deep sea research. The yellow "hardhats" are just to protect the glass sphere. The sphere is "evacuated" to an interior pressure of less than .3 atmospheres.

  • PS_2628 So hot and sunny she needed some shade.
  • PS_2615 The smiling crew as we leave Beauty Bay….just before the alternator burned up and we were hit with gusts of 40 to 50 knots, dragging anchor and nearly being driven aground.
